Credit card debt: How to deal with it

Published by Bryson at 12:44 am under Credit Cards

Do you have a hard time paying your credit card bills? Starting to get notices from waiting creditors to pay? Worried that you might lose your properties like your house because of credit debt? Chin up: Dealing with credit card debt is not as hard as you may think.

If there’s any consolation, you’re not the only one facing such situation. At some point, many people like you face financial crises with credit card debt. But you must remember that your financial situation doesn’t mean it should go straight to the dogs, making it worse than as it is.

Here are some tips to help you cope with your credit card debt:
Make a Budget. If you want to have a grab of your financial situation before you lose everything, making a budget is what you should do first. Assess how much do you get from your income or other means and your expenditures. For example, if getting that posh apartment means you have to limit your meals to once a day, then it is not a great and sound budgeting decision. Your goal is ensure that you can answer for all the basic necessities: food, housing, clothes, health-related costs, among others.
Contacting Your Creditors. Remember: Running away from your creditors is not the answer. It is not a solution, and may in fact lead you to bigger problems. If you are having trouble paying off your debts, address this immediately with your creditors. State to them sincerely and fully the reason why it has become hard for you to pay these debts, and check if they could give you a revised payment arrangement that will put you at ease on your payment terms. Do not let creditors turn over your situation to someone or an agency to do the collecting for them, as this means that they have given up on you.
How to address Debt Collectors.  There is a law that gives certain conditions for debt collectors as to when and how they should ask you to pay. The federal law, Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, clearly states that those collecting debts may not bug you, give false assertions, or do practices that are not fair when they are getting to collect money from you.
Credit Counseling. You could also consider getting the aid of groups or institutions that will help you in your problems. If you managed to have an improved payment arrangement of your debt with a good credit counseling organization, creditors may approve of your proposition and accept your modified arrangement plan..
Bankruptcy. Generally, personal bankruptcy is known as the last choice to fix your ballooning credit debt. A bankruptcy unfortunately stays on your financial information report for years. Getting additional credit, buying a house, sometimes even getting a job might be hard for you. Technically, however, it is a legal way of addressing your credit debt.

There is only one way to handle credit card debt . Pay them, and pay them on time!
If you can’t pay off the balance then make the largest payment that you can afford.
If you can’t occasionally pay off the balance then you are in too deep!
Nothing is better than being out of dept.
We all get tired of not having what we want when we want it.
But credit cards are usery You become their slave and they become the cracker.
It may seem hard to save up money for the things you want but it is much cheaper in the long run if you do it the old school way!
Look, if you open a savings account the bank actually adds money to your savings and you actually save money on the things you want using cash (it opens up the door to bargaining) .
Then you can get really good deals on all the things you want.

Personally the little tips that you have given in this blog post can be considered for maintaining the credit limit and to avoid credit card debt. Credit card debt is very common among people who have very low credit limits. You have brought out the various issues.

the easiest way to avoid credit card debt is by spending less than you have.

Everyone should be saving more! we certainly can’t count on social security.

I run a financial literacy class at my church and one of the key things I emphasize is for people not to run away from their credit card problems. I have found people who just pretend the problem does not exist and just ignore it. Doing so makes things worse. The first step to helping yourself out of debt is acknowledging that you have a problem and understanding the extent of your problem. Great post.

It is very important to pay attention to expenses. Credit cards are great just that you need to be responsible enough to use them wisely.

Debt consolidation can help, but not the ones that take percentages. Alot of credit unions will help for free.

i had a credit card issue, so I jumped to another credit provider with the lower interest rate (transferred it).
don’t know if it’s the wise move, time will tell :-)

I agree that the best way to handle credit card debt is to just pay the card off at the end of each month!

I think that it would be beneficial for someone that is having trouble to use the Debt Snowball Debt Reduction Plan to start paying off their debt and try to compeletly pay off all of their debt.

I think that debt is a very bad thing and we should try our best to stay out of debt all together.

Wonderful tips for humans during the recession. More and more people will have trouble with credit cards as they stretch their budgets to fill their gas tanks, pay for groceries and electricity.

I must warn everyone not to use credit repair companies which promise to help you pay off of your debt and clean up your credit. I have seen many of them keep the customer’s hard-earned money for themselves as the customer’s credit rating drops to nothing, and they are forced into bankruptcy and judgments. Always check with the better business bureau, even if it is a well-known big credit repair company mentioned on reputable television news programs. I recommend humans contact creditors on their own instead.

Spend less than you make, and you’ll grow rich. And well said, making budget really helps. I write all my money spent into an excel sheet for couple months now and it really helps to save some cash. :)

I was once a credit card agent of Citibank. In my opinion, users should always be responsible of what they have spent with their credit cards. Not just something like “use it first, think later”. It’s something we call ‘future money’ in your pocket.
